Latin American dances – the general name of ballroom and folk dances, the homeland of which is considered to be Latin America.

The characteristic features of Latin are energetic, passionate and incendiary movements accompanied by swaying hips.

History of origin
The roots of Latin American dances can be traced back to the 19th century, when African, Spanish and Indian musical styles were mixed together in America. The program of Latin American ballroom dances includes 5 elements.

The history of these dances we will consider:

  • samba;
  • cha cha cha;
  • rumba;
  • paso doble;
  • jive.

Samba is a Brazilian dance that originated in the state of Bahia. It became famous thanks to the Brazilian carnivals that appeared in the 1920s and 30s. If earlier Brazilian carnivals were traditionally held in Rio de Janeiro, now they are held in other major cities of Brazil.

Cha-cha-cha is a musical dance and style that came from Cuba. It originated in the 1950s in the process of evolution and experimentation of Cuban composer Enrique Horrin from Danson. The dance is still popular in Cuba, where it can be seen in any cafe and at street parties.

Rumba is considered the dance with the deepest emotional content. It appeared in the 19th century in Havana. It is believed that rumba is a dance where erotic feelings, passion between a man and a woman are expressed. Although originally rumba is a wedding dance, and all the movements in it denote the family duties of the spouses.

Jive is a dance of African-American origin, which appeared in the United States in the early 1940s. Initially, jive is a kind of swing with its fast and free movements. Modern dance differs from swing in manner, although it uses the same figures and movements.

The dance is fast and sparkling, which allows dancers not only to show their skills, but also physical fitness. There is no jumping in jive.

When practicing Latin American dances you need to see the work of your legs. Therefore, leggings or cycling shorts will suit you for training. As for the top, it can be a top or a T-shirt.

It can also be a gymnastic or ballet leotard with tights and a short skirt that does not hinder movement. A bodysuit or jumpsuit may be suitable. Under it, wear tights or thin leggings, on top – a light skirt.
